Tableau Version Management is now available!

Earlier this year during Tableau Conference 2024, we announced that Tableau competitively selected Wiiisdom as a preferred partner to co-innovate on new version management capabilities. Over the past few months, our teams have been working hard to build these capabilities, and today I am very proud to announce that they are now available in Wiiisdom for Tableau! This article will walk you through what can now be achieved by leveraging Wiiisdom for Tableau and this is just the beginning, the best is yet to come!

Version Control in Tableau: A Key to Compliance and Transparency

The need for version control capabilities initially arose to address and alleviate compliance-related challenges faced by Tableau customers with a specific focus on:

  • Providing unlimited versioning of content without the ability to change the past,
  • Previewing, comparing, and restoring versions with commenting,
  • Enabling not only Tableau Creators to do this but also non-technical business users and auditors/regulators who need to see the whole audit trail.

Accessing a complete and clear audit trail is essential for compliance regulatory purposes because it ensures transparency and accountability across the whole organization.

What do these new capabilities look like?

You can now effortlessly collaborate on Tableau content versions to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance around the clock thanks to Wiiisdom’s new version management capabilities. Here I’ll take you the through the key features now available, as of fall 2024:

Version Scanners

Rather than imposing additional action on developers or other analysts, we have created scanners that automatically monitor your Tableau site, live. Every time an existing workbook is updated or a new one is published in Tableau, our scanner will detect this event and create a version in Wiiisdom for Tableau with no manual effort or technical knowledge required.

Once you open our version scanner, you will see a list of Tableau sites your Tableau administrators have defined in Wiiisdom, along with their projects. You can choose to scan an entire site or any number of projects. The view below replicates exactly what you can see in Tableau, depending on the security access levels in place, thanks to Tableau APIs.

Once the scanner is first enabled, every existing workbook will be recognized and identified as version one.

Version Browser

The next step is to access the Version Browser to navigate through your Tableau content and access the version(s) of your workbooks.

Once again, the Tableau security model is fully leveraged thanks to the Personal Access Token, ensuring you see exactly what you have access to in Tableau—nothing more, nothing less.

Navigate Tableau Projects you have access to and list versions for selected Workbooks.

Unlike with Tableau Cloud where you can only have 10 revisions, we provide you with an unlimited number of versions.

Preview Versions

Once a version is taken, you can visually preview that version and any versions created over time. This capability allows users to easily see how the workbooks looked over time, including which filters and parameters were set as default, dashboards and worksheets that were visible, formatting and much more, facilitating compliance by maintaining a clear audit trail.

Compare Versions

Along with previewing versions of dashboards, you can also visually compare versions. This capability allows users to see to any visual differences between two versions of the same workbook.

NB: In 2025, on top of the visual comparison, we plan to add 11 extra ways to compare the different versions of your workbooks! Watch this space!
